What is an aerated wastewater treatment system?

If you are living in an area that does not join to a council sewer, you will need to treat your home’s wastewater on site, using an Aerated Wastewater (home sewage) Treatment System (AWTS). An aerated wastewater treatment system, sometimes known as an aerobic wastewater treatment plant; use aeration and clarification processes to biologically treat wastewater. Following disinfection, the treated wastewater is typically irrigated to a dedicated area above ground via sprinklers or dripper systems, generally on grass or plants on your property. Alternatively, undisinfected wastewater is disposed of to a subsurface land application system such as a soakage trench.

Why do I need to service my system?

If your system is not maintained and treated properly there can be serious adverse effects – spread of disease and bacteria, contamination of groundwater and surface water, unpleasant odours, noise and insects, degradation of soil and vegetation.

An AWTS also has moving parts and pumps that need regular checking.

How often do I need to service my system?

If your property has an aerated wastewater treatment system (AWTS) installed, under SA Health legislation, your local council will request regular maintenance reports of your system’s performance. It is the homeowner’s responsibility to ensure this system is serviced on a regular basis as recommended by the manufacturer by a qualified and accredited wastewater service technician to ensure the system operates properly.

BRISTOL wastewater and plumbing services is your local accredited wastewater service provider with qualified service technicians available to service your system. Our technicians will visit your property on a regular basis (every 3 months or as per your manufactures recommendations) to check your system is operating to standard codes and will work with you to rectify any issues.
